The Origin of the Panda Drum

There are thousands of ways to produce sound and music through musical instruments and one of the most common musical instruments used is the drum. The drum is the world’s oldest and most ubiquitous musical instrument, it belongs to the percussion group of musical instruments. It consists of at least one membrane called a drumhead. It is played directly either with the player's hands or with a percussion mallet to produce the sound. Other techniques have been used to cause drums to make sound, such as the thumb roll. Drums are awesome instruments to learn at any age but when you are just starting out, you may need some extra guidance and help.

One of the easiest to learn drum instruments is the tongue drum. A tongue drum is a very melodic percussion instrument and is highly praised for its ease and calming sound, which does not require any special technique to learn. This steel tongue drum is ideal for beginners, everyone can start playing without any difficulty and find pleasure with just a few notes. This drum is commonly used for meditation, yoga, healing and therapy.

Hang Drum

The drum is also famous in the Carribean islands. Another type of drum instrument often used to relax and enjoy is the steelpan drum (also known as Jamaican Steel Drum). A steel pan drum is a high-pitched percussion instrument that originated in Trinidad and Tobago, it is their national instrument. The drum is normally struck by using a pair of straight sticks tipped with rubber; the size and type of rubber tip varies according to the class of pan being played. Some experienced musicians also use four pansticks, holding two in each hand. The musician who plays the steelpan drum is called a pannist.

Steelpan drums, compared to tongue drums, have a more lively rhythm and vibe. While the tongue drum is perfect for calm and relaxing moments, the steelpan’s carefree mood is great for happy celebrations in beaches, backyard parties and weddings.

Hang Drum vs Tongue Drum

Many of us think that all drums sound the same and the different styles being sold in the market are just for aesthetic purposes. Finding the perfect instrument that suits your lifestyle is not as easy as you think! You have to consider a lot of factors - especially purpose, convenience, size and price.

So what is a hang drum? A hang drum or commonly known as a handpan. A handpan is a musical instrument made from two metal half-shells that are stuck together to form a resonant hollow chamber. Each handpan is tuned to a fixed set of notes organized around a center tone. They are played by gently tapping the tone fields with your fingers. The resulting music is characterized by dreamy and hypnotic sounds.

How does a hang drum differ from a tongue drum and which one should you buy? Let’s first start with the tongue drum. While both drums produce beautiful and soothing sounds, the tongue drum is a more ideal percussion instrument for beginners. With the tongue drum, you are able to play with it using the mallets or your hands. It is also convenient for its size as you can take it anywhere you go. They are also made of thicker steel and resonate much longer. Unlike the hang drum, it is also not sensitive to cold or hot temperatures and even after years of use, the tongue drum will also not go out of tune. As for the hang drum, it is more expensive than that of the tongue drum. It is also highly sensitive to too much heat from the sun. Hang drums that are not made of steel can also rust. They are also highly sensitive and get easily out of tune. To conclude, many people prefer the tongue drum over the hang drum as it is user-friendly and easy for kids to play and learn with it even in a matter of days.
